Mixed media- acrylic and paper collage elements. UNITÉ is inspired by the ongoing terrorist attacks taking place around the world, and the biased public reactions and media attention in response to these attacks. The title is in french to represent the huge social media uproar after the terrorist attack which took place in Paris, and the complete silence regarding similar attacks which happened in Turkey, India and Malaysia not long afterwards. The grenade in my painting is filled with the word ‘help’ in Punjabi, Turkish, Malay, French, Arabic and English to represent a united humanity, to point out the helplessness that a human being will feel during an attack no matter what religion or country they are from. We may speak different languages, have different skin shades, live in different countries, but at the end of it all, when facing death, terror and murder, we are all the same, we all feel fear. We are all one and the same. I want this painting to highlight our vulnerability as humans and maybe this can help us all UNITE in the face of terrorism.
