Product Description

Some of the layers include reconstructions of Islamic filigree and geometric designs, and photographs of coral, kaleidoscopic imagery. This tile features a prominent Islamic design centred within a layered border.

Coral reef habitats represent some of the most dense and varied ecosystems on Earth. Though they cover only 0.2 percent of the ocean’s floor, scientists estimate that nearly one million species of fish, invertebrates, and algae can be found in and around the world’s reefs.

While reef habitats appear to be robust enough to withstand almost anything, they are extremely fragile are a sensitive bioindicator of environmental changes. Not only are most corals brittle, but they usually need pristine, clear, warm, relatively nutrient-free waters to survive. Over the past 50 years, humans have put an enormous amount of pressure on coral reef environments by altering their waters and tearing up their foundations. From dynamite fishing to global warming, we are rapidly sending the world’s reefs into oblivion. According to the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2008, 19 percent of the world’s reefs are effectively lost, 15 percent are seriously threatened with loss in the next 10-20 years, and 20 percent are under threat of loss in the next 20-40 years – suggesting a mass extinction event.

The artwork is printed on environmentally mindful 290 gsm weight Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper with high-quality inks, and is suitable for framing. Printed artwork dimensions are approximately 12” x 12” (square) with an additional 2? white border on all four sides.

The work is printed using museum quality, Fine Art Trade Guild approved Epson printers along with Epson Ultrachrome™ HDR inks. The paper selected and the inks used are archival quality and tests have shown colours last up to 70 to 80 years, and in some cases a lot longer.
